Baltimore’s Premier History Tour Guide
For nearly forty-years, Wayne Schaumburg, a retired, local Baltimore public school teacher led tours through Baltimore’s historic Green Mount Cemetery from early spring through the fall. The cemetery was one of his two favorite and most popular tours, the other tracing the route of the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904.
Wayne’s knowledge of the cemetery’s history and of many of the early industrialists, philanthropists, politicians, military leaders, artists, sculptors and even its more notorious citizens who rest in eternity within its hallowed walls is an unmatched legacy that will endure for years to come.
Sadly, on the 22nd of July 2022, Baltimore lost one of its most favorite sons when Wayne R. Schaumburg passed away at the age of 75 after a long and courageous battle against pancreatic cancer at his home in Ocean View, Delaware.
The Northern Chesapeake Heritage Foundation wants to remember Wayne Schaumburg and his contributions to preserving Baltimore’s rich history and culture, and for his decades long dedication to teaching and sharing his knowledge to all who would listen, from the young children passing through his classroom to the out-of-town visitor drawn to the rich, diverse landscape of Baltimore and Maryland’s storied past.
Our goal is to place a large, wrought iron memorial bench and plaque within Green Mount Cemetery that will honor Wayne, tell his story, and provide a place for visitors to rest in the tranquility of Baltimore’s premier “Garden Cemetery.” A mock-up of the plaque can be seen on the donation page HERE.
Those who had the pleasure of meeting or befriending Wayne can take a moment or two to reflect on their time with him, whether as a young student in one of his classes or as a guest on one of his popular historical tours through the cemetery or other sites in Baltimore.
To achieve our goal to honor Wayne Schaumburg for his contributions and give his legacy the recognition we feel it deserves, we would like to invite all those who knew Wayne as a teacher, friend, or tour guide, to make a small donation to help bring this project to reality.
We hope you will join us in bringing this worthy tribute to a treasured Baltimorean to fruition.
