America’s sons and daughters have a long and storied history serving the Armed Forces, from the State Militia of old, to the newly formed “Space Force” of the 21st century. Preserving our history as a matter of pride and for posterity must certainly include the memory of those who served and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice building, defending and preserving our nation, our freedoms and liberties, and way of life.
The Northern Chesapeake Region of Maryland has contributed mightily to the cause of freedom and liberty, offering our sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers in support of every war, conflict, national disaster, and in other times of peril that our nation has faced over its 250-year history.
Founded by two veterans of America’s Armed Forces, the Northern Chesapeake Heritage Foundation is committed to identifying and honoring the memory of those who came before us. Unfortunately, many of our past comrades have gone to their eternal rest in unmarked gravesites or their mortal remains have been lost to history.
Our mission is to identify and locate these veterans or if remains are lost or destroyed, determine where those lost were last known to be and procure memorial markers for them. Most of our efforts are satisfied through the Veterans Administration, they will provide a government issued marker for qualified veterans; those who do not qualify, we will procure through other means. But we need your help, there are often cases where costs are associated with placing markers in a cemetery; these costs can include permitting, building a foundation, and installation.
We are also dedicated to cleaning and repairing veteran markers when and where we can. The Veterans Administration will not issue government markers if a gravesite is currently marked, even if that marker is in poor repair. Though there are exceptions to this policy, including the requirement to remove the existing one, it is preferable to retain the original marker where possible, especially if it can be repaired and cleaned satisfactorily.
In addition to your generous financial support, we also welcome the help of volunteers to assist us where feasible. There are many individuals and groups who donate their time to cleaning and preserving veteran, and other, markers and memorials, and we’d like to invite you to join the effort. If you would like to help, please use the “Contact Us” link below and send a note.
Lastly, if you know of, or would like assistance in obtaining and placing a marker for a relative, friend or other veteran that you have identified, please send us a note and we would be honored to assist you.
Thank you in advance for your generosity in support of our mission.
