Fifty Years in a Maryland Kitchen

Posted on by

Compiled, written, and published in 1873 by Mrs. Jane (Gilmor) Howard (1801-1890), wife of Benjamin Chew Howard, son of Col. John Eager Howard of Revolutionary War fame. Jane’s parents were wealthy Baltimore merchant William Gilmor and Mary Ann (Smith) Gilmor.

A must-read for anyone interested in the history of early Maryland cuisine and traditional cooking, preserving and even cleaning practices, Fifty Years in a Maryland Kitchen, is that historical work that gives the reader a front row seat in a presentation of culinary fare and traditional kitchen practices of19th century Maryland.

Mrs. Howard shares her personal experiences cooking for her very large family (a husband, twelve children and untold numbers of guests) over fifty years. Discover her unique recipes, cooking tips, and detailed instructions for cleaning, soapmaking, preserving food, and preparing desserts, all drawn from her life as a wife, mother, and hostess.

Mrs. Howard shares many anecdotes and family stories as well, not just in the kitchen but from throughout her long life as a mother and “Lady of Society.” What better way to learn about 19th century life than to read firsthand from someone who lived nearly the entire century, giving birth to, and raising twelve children (some would not live to adulthood) through major shifts and upheaval in every aspect of daily life.

Fifty Years in a Maryland Kitchen is also a valuable resource for those simply in search of traditional Maryland recipes.
