Shortly after basic training Vincent J. Speranza would observe a parachute jump demonstration made by a newly formed group of elite airborne soldiers – It would change his life forever.
Assigned to H Company, 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the famed 101st Airborne division, Pfc Speranza would arrive in Europe soon after the failed Market Garden Campaign in the Netherlands in mid-September, 1944.
Vincent’s first “jump” was not what he thought it would be; stationed near Bastogne and assigned as a runner during the Battle of the Bulge, his first jump would be off the tailgate of a truck.

While in Bastogne during one run, Vincent decided to check on a wounded friend who was laid up in a bombed out church that was serving as a field hospital . Vincent asked his friend if there was anything he could do for him, his friend replied “Yeah, can you go find me something to drink!”
The story that followed is still remembered today as one of the most enduring legends from the Battle of the Bulge and WWII.
